Digging a little deeper, dragging the book onto Calibre does the following: - Copies it into Calibre’s library, removing the.kepub from the name - Creates a cover.jpg - Creates a metadata.opf The problem seems to come during the actual sync. Calibre is not only a free eBooks reader but also an open source eBook converter that can convert Kobo eBooks to epub. Calibre is a powerful program available for managing your e-book library, and can handle most major e-readers. It is also one of the most popular and commonly used free eBook converters.

If you’ve read any of my reviews for Kobo eReaders lately, the Kobo Mini, Kobo Glo, and Kobo Aura HD, you’ll notice that I complain a lot about how Kobo chooses to format ebooks.

My main issue is with all the wasted space. Kobo insists on adding a huge bar at the bottom of a page to display page numbers, and another huge bar at the top of the screen to display the title (seriously Kobo, like I can’t figure out what book I’m reading that I need to be reminded on every single freaking page).

There’s also the fact most Kobo ebooks have spaces between paragraphs instead of indented paragraphs, which wastes even more space. Personally I just want my ebooks to look as close as possible to the paper books I’ve been reading my whole life, which means indented paragraphs and justified text.

And don’t get me started on how much I hate the long paragraph bug that makes it so there’s even more wasted space at the bottom of the page for certain books and fonts.

The irony is that Kobo’s ereaders offer more layout and font adjusting options than any other brand, but when it comes right down to it there are too many limitations and variables to make good use of the settings. In fact I can’t think of an ebook reader or app that annoys me more than Kobo’s software.

Luckily, there’s a great free ebook tool called Calibre that you can use to re-format your ebooks to have more control over formatting. With the proper settings you can easily minimize wasted space and remove spaces between paragraphs. You can even get rid of the entire big bar of wasted space at the top of the screen (unless you are running firmware version 2.5.2).

Kobo Formatting Tip: Minimizing Wasted Space

Awhile back a reader named Evenft left a comment about what settings to use with Calibre to minimize wasted space. Here’s the procedure below, and here’s the link to some pictures showing the settings in Calibre if you need a visual.

You can use Calibre’s conversion feature to change the CSS settings in an ebook. If you are converting regular DRM-free ePubs all you have to do is import them and follow the directions below. If you want to convert purchased ebooks from Kobo you’ll have to login to your account and download the copies first, which requires using Adobe Digital Editions, and then import them into Calibre to convert them. You can also easily remove the DRM if you choose to make it so you can read your ebooks on other ereaders and apps.

– After importing the ebooks into Calibre, select the ones you want to modify and choose “Convert books”.

– Make sure the output format is ePub.

– Click on the “Look & Feel” tab. Enter the following code into the Extra CSS box:

body {orphans: 0; widows: 0}

– You can check the box to remove spaces between paragraphs too.

– There’s also the option to remove existing CSS properties for fonts, margins, and padding under “Filter Style Information”.

– You can choose to set default line spacing to 0% and margins to 0 pt as well.

Some of these settings aren’t needed depending on how the ebook is originally formatted. The two most important things are adding the extra code in the CSS box and checking to remove spaces between paragraphs.

About two years ago, when we sync purchased eBooks via Kobo for desktop app, we can get EPUB files, then we can sideload them to Sony eReader or any other device which supports Adobe Adept DRM to read.

Later Kobo changed the rules, we can only get .kepub files from Kobo for desktop app, even the files are saved in a pretty deep path. And no program can read these .kepub files except Kobo. That brings much trouble to us.

I used to write an article about how to get EPUB files from Kobo official site, in the past days this is the unique method when we want to read Kobo books on apps or devices other than Kobo's. Until now...

First things first: Before reading the following parts, please make sure you have got Kobo for desktop installed and synced the purchased eBooks.

Convert Epub To Kepub

Method 1Convert with Calibre Obok DeDRM Plugin

Step 1. Install Calibre and the plugin

Kepubify Calibre

Go to Calibre's official download page to choose the correct version for your computer's operating system. I am going to use Calibre for Windows 7 as example, but it is also working on Mac and Linux, there won't any operating diffrecence.

This plugin is called Obok DeDRM, please click the button below to download this plugin. (Disclaim: I get this plugin from website, someone in MobileRead forum sent me the link, and the source is reliable, no malware or virus is contained.)

Open Calibre, click 'Preferences' --> 'Plugins'.

As this plugin is not yet collected by Calibre's plugin library, we can only manually install it. Therefore, we need to click 'Load plugin from file', and choose the obok_plugin.zip you just downloaded from the blue button above.

Click 'Yes' and 'OK', keep all the options default. Finally you need to restart Calibre, and you will see the plugin displayed on the top menu bar.

Step 2. Run Obok DeDRM plugin to convert KEPUB to EPUB

Click 'Obok DeDRM' on the menu bar, you will see an image like this.

The plugin finds the synced books automatically and display them in a list. Choose the files you want to process and click 'OK'.

A small tip: You can choose multiple files by pressing 'Ctrl' or 'Shift' like what we do in windows file explorer.

While the plugin converts the Kepub files to EPUB, it also removes the DRM. You can find DRM-free EPUB files in Calibre's library folder.

Now you can easily read Kobo books on any app or device supporting EPUB format, and you can also use Calibre to convert it to Mobi and read on Kindle.

Important points to update

If this plugin fails to process your KEPUB files, please delete the Kobo desktop app and re-install it, then try it again.

Obok plugin only displays the DRMed Kobo books, in other words, we can't use this plugin to convert DRM-free Kobo Kepub books to normal EPUB. Some resources said we can manually change the extension name to EPUB, and use Calibre to convert it to EPUB again. However, I personally don't recommend this method, it might output an messed up EPUB file. However, I will follow up this issue, will update the article once there is a solid solution. (Now the following part is the updated method, highly valued by thousands of customers who are crazy eBooks reading lovers.)

Method 21-Click to Convert Kobo to ePub

Step 1: Install Epubor Ultimate Converter

I often used method 1 to help me resolve my problems but the result is, I still met lots of another problems. It's painful to get a messed up ePub file! Step 2: Sync Kobo desktop to get Kepub files

Run the Kobo desktop reading app on your computer, and then log in with your own Kobo account. By default this app will automatically help you sync your Kobo library after you get the started.

I've said that all the files synced via Kobo desktop are with KEPUB format and are saved in a pretty deep path. But where to find them after all? What's the exactly location of Kobo KEPUB files?

Convert Kindle To Epub Calibre

Q: I cannot find the kepub files on my mac. There is no kobo folder under Application support. Why?

Maybe your Kobo desktop is not downloaded from kobo official site, but from App store. Please ensure that your kobo for mac is from official site. This is the most important for kepub drm removing.

Step 3: Remove DRM from Kobo KEPUB

Get Ultimate converter started please. It will automatically detect your Kobo desktop including all the synced KEPUB books.

Then grab those KEPUB books to the right area.

Different from using Calibre plugin, with this product when books added, drm soon removed with high speed, while Calibre asks us to load a plugin first and then start removing drm.

Another good point of this tool is, Calibre Obok DeDRM plugin can only deal with DRMed Kepub books. This means, before drm removing we have to check these books had drm or not, and what's worse, for those drm free kepub files, we can't convert them to epub. But if you choose Ultimate converter you won't have these worries! It helps detect all the synced KEPUB files no matter they had drm or not.

Step 4: Convert kepub files to epub

Once drm removed, then the following step is pretty simple. Select EPUB as output format, then click on 'Convert' button.

Then the converting will start. Batch conversion supported well, just with one click.

Wait for a minute. Once finished it will pop up a window that tells you where the output ePub books are stored.

Anything finished well here. Now you can open and read these converted ePub books with any ePub reader, or transfer your ePub books to iPad for reading with iBooks, and more.
